Sort and switch: rule switching practice
This test measures cognitive flexibility: how quickly and accurately you can drop one rule and apply another. You classify shapes and numbers by colour, shape or number range, while messages change the rule part-way through and an identical pair overrides everything.
Why it matters for ATC selection
Rule-switching and multitasking tasks of this kind appear in many air traffic control selection batteries, because a controller constantly switches between aircraft, frequencies and procedures without losing track.
How the practice works
- Each item shows an object, and sometimes a second object in the pair box.
- The answer boxes tell you what to sort by: colour, shape or number range.
- A message at the top changes how certain items are classified, and stays until it changes.
- If the item and the pair item are identical, choose Pair. This overrides every other rule and message.
- Work as quickly and accurately as you can for 3 minutes.
The full-length test is free with an account. Every practice item is original. Full access adds feedback on where you lost marks and how to improve.
Tips
- Read the message line before every item: a message stays active until it changes.
- Check the pair box first. An identical pair beats every other rule.
- Build accuracy untimed first, then add speed. A fast wrong answer costs as much as a slow one.
