Practice test · Learning and applying rules
Rules: learning and applying a rule set
You memorise a short set of rules for assigning holding points to departures, then apply them from memory, quickly and in the right order of priority. It measures how well you learn rules and keep applying them under time pressure.
Why it matters for ATC selection
Learning and applying rules is assessed in many ATC selection batteries. It mirrors the job: controllers work to procedures and letters of agreement that they must apply instantly and in the right order.
How the practice works
- You will have 45 seconds to learn four rules. They are hidden once the test starts.
- Then assign each departing aircraft to a holding point, using keys 1 to 4 or the buttons.
- There are 30 aircraft and 3 minutes.
The full-length test is part of full access. Every practice item is original. Full access adds feedback on where you lost marks and how to improve.
Tips
- Learn the priority order first: which rule overrides which.
- Say the rule to yourself as you answer for the first few items, then let it become automatic.
- When an item feels unusual, check the override rule before anything else.
