Figure match: perceptual speed practice

You decide as quickly as you can whether the lower figure exactly matches one of the figures above it. Small differences in a single line are the traps. It measures perceptual speed: taking in visual detail quickly and accurately.

Why it matters for ATC selection

Perceptual speed is one of the core abilities measured in air traffic control selection, because controllers scan a radar picture and spot small changes continuously.

How the practice works

  • There is always a figure in the lower box and at least one in the boxes above.
  • Choose Equal if the lower figure is identical to any figure above it, otherwise Unequal.
  • Keys: F for Equal, J for Unequal.
  • The test runs for 3 minutes.

Tips

  • Pick one corner and check each line leaving it, then move round the figure in the same order.
  • Trust a clean match. Re-checking a figure you have already compared costs time.
  • Practise little and often: perceptual speed improves with regular short sessions.
