Instrument recall: short-term memory practice

You memorise a panel of instruments (clock, thermometer, battery, compass and gauge) and then pick each reading from four options. It measures short-term visual memory and how well you encode information quickly.

Why it matters for ATC selection

Short-term memory is assessed in most ATC selection processes. Controllers hold callsigns, levels and clearances in mind while doing something else.

How the practice works

  • You will see a panel of 3 to 5 instruments for 6 seconds.
  • Then, for each instrument, choose the reading it showed from four options.
  • Answer time is limited to 9 seconds per question.
  • There are 6 panels.

The full-length test runs for 5 minutes. The full-length test is part of full access. Every practice item is original. Full access adds feedback on where you lost marks and how to improve.

Tips

  • Turn each reading into a word or number as you see it: "sixteen thirty-five", "north-east", "three bars".
  • Read the scale, not the bar length. The wrong options differ by small amounts.
  • Rehearse the list once in order before the panel disappears.
