Mental arithmetic for ATC selection

Speed, distance and time problems (closing speeds, climb and descent rates and wind) alternate with plain arithmetic, all without a calculator and with round numbers. It measures numerical reasoning under time pressure.

Why it matters for ATC selection

Mental arithmetic is tested in many ATC selection processes, and controllers use it constantly: time to a fix, closing speed, how long a descent takes.

How the practice works

  • Solve each problem without a calculator.
  • Speed, distance and time problems (including closing speed, climb and descent rates and wind) alternate with plain arithmetic. The numbers are kept round.

Tips

  • Learn the rules of thumb: 60 knots is 1 NM a minute, 240 knots is 4 NM a minute.
  • Closing speed is the two speeds added together when aircraft fly towards each other.
  • For climbs and descents, use the change in altitude, not the final level.
